Andrew D. Buschmeier, Ph.D.

Senior Patent Agent

Overview

Andy works with clients large and small to prosecute, license, and perform due diligence on patents in the fields of electronics and computing, and in communication systems and semiconductor devices in particular. His passion for technology, his advanced skills, and his training in electrical engineering fully support his understanding of clients’ inventions and inform him as he guides their intellectual property pursuits. Clients consistently praise his technical proficiency and strong grasp of a multiplicity of scientific fields. Andy’s advanced technical training and skill set foster his effective interface with clients on the most complicated applications of technology.

Andy is also immersed in patent licensing for clients in a wide range of areas. He generates extensive claim charts and has served as technical lead to advocate and defend clients’ positions in licensing negotiation meetings. He also analyzes the validity, infringement, and claim construction of patents to assist in acquiring, selling, and asserting patent portfolios ranging in size from a single patent to thousands of patents in the fields of wireless communication technology, graphics processing, software applications, consumer electronics, and processor design, among other areas.

Practicing in intellectual property as a patent agent for over 12 years with an extensive background in licensing, Andy understands the importance of drafting accurate, detailed, and defensive patent applications that can return real value to the client in future, aggressive patent assertion programs.

Using his strong background in mobile technology, Andy has helped numerous clients in the wireless telecommunication industry acquire accurate, valuable patent protection. He has helped prosecute countless patent applications in the U.S. and abroad, working to obtain the grant of a patent with very few patent office transactions, thus keeping client costs to a minimum. Andy’s background in circuit design is impressive and he uses his acumen to prosecute patents successfully and efficiently for digital and analog integrated circuits, discrete components, and system-level designs.

Previous Work and Industry Experience

Before joining Volpe Koenig, Andy was a design engineer working in the fields of lighting control and high-speed, mixed-signal integrated circuits while pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Andy’s work included researching and developing novel techniques for phase noise analysis and low-phase noise oscillators. Andy also designed commercial product prototypes, testers for manufacturing lines, high speed CML buffers, 0.13u CMOS voltage regulators, numerous software applications, and network communication interface layers.

Life Beyond Law

Andy is an active extrovert who loves to exercise, enjoy all the opportunities Philadelphia has to offer, and give back to the community through charity work and community service. He was born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia and now loves living and working in Center City. Andy is a diehard Philly sports fan, and can’t wait to celebrate at the next parade down Broad Street!
