    Professional Experience

Dawn assists clients seeking to protect and enforce their key intellectual property domestically and globally, particularly in the technology areas of: LEDs and laser diodes, wireless communication systems (e.g., LTE and IEEE 802 technologies), resistors, capacitors, inductors, analog and digital circuits, microprocessors, CMOS imagers, image processing and related optics, software, medical devices and systems, and consumer electronics.

Dawn provides value to many clients through a customized, rather than a one-size-fits-all, approach to patent protection. Her method includes personally working with clients to understand their individual goals and business models and developing a tailored strategy based on these conversations. She  methodically drafts applications and claims with individual client goals in mind and strives to ultimately secure a high-quality patent that is practical and effective for short- and long-term goals.

    Client Work

During her time with Volpe and Koenig, and through her previous work at a local IP firm, Dawn has worked with a wide variety of clients, from small start-up companies to major corporations. Through this experience, she has learned that valuable patent prosecution involves more than simply preparing and filing patent applications and office action responses. It involves understanding each individual client’s goals, strategically drafting applications and claims based on those goals, getting the application allowed and ultimately securing a high quality patent that is usable to the particular client. For some clients, this may mean drafting an application that broadly protects an invention for future commercialization. For other clients, it may require meticulously tailoring claims to an existing product or for use in a client’s licensing or litigation endeavors. Whatever the prosecution goals, Dawn is passionate about providing a high quality work product every time.

Dawn’s patent experience includes managing and prosecuting entire patent portfolios, strategically drafting claims, preparing patent applications tailored to the goals of a particular client and preparing claim charts for use during and after prosecution. Her experience also extends beyond traditional patent prosecution to include pre- and post-filing strategy and corrections work, including conducting pre-filing studies of existing patents and products and post issuance validity studies. She is also experienced in defensive and offensive strategy, including conducting non-infringement, infringement and freedom to use studies, preparing opinions and portfolio development.

    Previous Work

Prior to beginning her career as a patent attorney, Dawn pursued and obtained an engineering degree cum laude from The College of New Jersey, focusing on electrical and mechanical engineering and business management coursework. From there, she went on to obtain her Juris Doctorate from the Villanova University School of Law. While in law school, Dawn was a managing editor of the school’s Sports and Entertainment Law Review and participated extensively in pro bono and public service activities, culminating in being awarded one of the school’s awards for excellence in pro bono activities. Her bro bono and public service work ranged from obtaining non-profit status for a local charter school as part of the school’s Lawyering Together program to conducting legal research for the Delaware Attorney General’s Office. Upon graduation from law school, Dawn worked as an attorney for a local IP boutique firm before joining Volpe and Koenig.

    Professional Activities

Dawn is personally and professionally passionate about diversity and inclusion, both within STEM fields and within the legal community.  She is a founding member of the firm’s diversity committee, which is committed to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion within the firm and our community. I enjoy learning about new organizational approaches to foster diversity and inclusion, and actively seek partnerships with such organizations to foster diversity in the community.
