Professional Experience

Tom’s practice focuses primarily on preparation and prosecution of U.S., international (PCT), and foreign patent applications.

Client Work

Tom enjoys helping clients achieve the maximum benefit from their IP by advising them on the most appropriate strategies for protection. He believes that by focusing on the most relevant aspect of their IP (patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret), the client will be able to enjoy the highest quality IP protection.

During his career, Tom successfully prosecuted a large number of patents, as well as a number of trademarks before the USPTO and has successfully argued cases before the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Tom represents clients of all sizes, from solo inventors to Fortune 500 corporations. He also represents client in patent and trademark matters in Federal District Court.

Previous Work

Tom has over 12 years total experience practicing all aspects of intellectual property, including 9 years as an attorney, and a technical advisor for several Philadelphia area lawfirms prior to joining Volpe and Koenig. Tom’s focus was on patent preparation and prosecution on technologies ranging from small simple mechanical devices to semiconductor designs. He also prosecuted trademark and copyright applications.

Tom represented clients in patent and trademark litigation matters in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, respectively.

Tom is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Prior to entering the legal profession as a technical advisor, Tom was an electrical engineer with experience in designing digital, electronic, and electromechanical relay devices, as well as designing airside and terminal electrical facilities for major US airports, such as a precision runway monitor (PRM) to allow multiple aircraft to perform simultaneous landings on parallel runways under instrument flight conditions.
