Tony’s practice specializes in the analysis of client business models and the design of legal strategies that complement and advance client objectives.
A longtime leader in the intellectual property (IP) field, Tony has corporate and private practice experience in all aspects of IP rights. His current practice focuses on client counseling and the development of an IP strategy that yields the best value from a client’s portfolio and, to the extent possible, avoids the IP rights of third parties. When needed, Tony negotiates inter parte matters and provides seasoned representation in state and federal litigation and before administrative agencies including the International Trade Commission, the Office of Unfair Competition and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Tony has expert experience in foreign intellectual property matters, including litigation, administrative proceedings and licensing of territorial and global rights. He also conducts intellectual property due diligence reviews for domestic and foreign transactions. In addition, he has prosecuted patent and trademark applications and rendered opinions regarding patentability, availability, validity, enforceability and licensing of patent, trademark and trade secret rights concerning optical identification systems, dimensioning systems, labeling equipment, fiber optic arrays, electrical connectors, circuit board structures and housings, CATV signal taps, storage batteries, papermakers fabrics and equipment, synthetic fiber, games, toys, drug delivery systems, material handling equipment, motor vehicles, automotive parts, lift and recline chairs, personal mobility devices, prefabricated wall structures, medical equipment, fluid containment structures, container lids, distribution systems, hand tools, molding equipment, personal care items, fire retardant materials and fire safety equipment.
Tony started his career as the first in-house attorney at the Allen Organ Company and later joined the in-house staff of AMP Inc. In the late 1970s, he returned to his home city of Philadelphia and entered private practice. In 1987, he joined Fred Koenig as a founding shareholder of Volpe and Koenig, P.C.

Tony is a frequent presenter at intellectual property seminars in the United States, Canada and Europe, and he was a Scholar-in-Residence for Legal Studies at Temple University’s Fox School of Business.
Tony was selected for inclusion in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers® , published by Thomson Reuters, for 2005-2016 and Best Lawyers® Philadelphia, published by Best Lawyers, LLC, for 2006-2016. He has also earned the Martindale-Hubbell’s top rating of “AV Preeminent”, published by Martindale-Hubbell®, from 2001-2016, signifying the highest level of professional excellence.
Additionally, Tony was honored as a Leader of Innovation Medal Recipient by the Verizon Philadelphia University Celebration of Innovation, published by the American Bar Foundation, for 2015.
Tony is a regular contributor to The Legal Intelligencer, Pennsylvania’s oldest daily law journal, and he has been a featured author in the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Newsletter.
In 2015, Tony was honored by his alma mater at the Verizon Philadelphia University Celebration of Innovation as a Leader of Innovation medal recipient. The annual Celebration showcases the global impact of higher education and innovation, and the award is one of the University’s highest honors.

Life Beyond the Law
Tony has always believed in giving back to the community that has afforded him so many opportunities, and today he serves as a trustee of the Bucks County Historical Society and as a dedicated mentor to a new generation of young attorneys. When he has a free afternoon, you’re more than likely to find him cheering on his grandkids at their soccer games.
